ALERT - IRS Impersonation Scam

BYU, BYU–Hawaii, BYU–Idaho
March 31, 2021

The IRS has issued an official warning about phishing e-mails that impersonate the IRS and target people who have “.edu” e-mail addresses. The subject of the message can vary but has included “Recalculation of your tax refund” and “Tax Refund Payment.” The message is made to look authentic by using the IRS logo, but they ask for your Social Security Number, date of birth, driver’s license, and electronic filing pin. Remember, the IRS does NOT send out unsolicited e-mails.

Do not click on the link or respond in any way. Remember to forward all suspicious e-mails as an attachment to phishing@byu.edu. The official warning is found at https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-warns-university-students-and-staff-of-impersonation-email-scam.
